How to use Microsoft® Excel® | The Making of this Free and Open Textbook...Superbowl Style.

How to use Microsoft® Excel® by Joseph Manzo is the first in a series of three IS textbooks to publish at Flat World Knowledge. Coincidentally, it was also the first book in the “FWK 2012 lineup” to publish. Now, I’m not a huge football fan, however, given that Super bowl Sunday is fast approaching AND our very own New York Giants will be fighting for the championship, I’m going to go with the whole “football theme” and give you the Manzo play-by-play so you can get a sense of how we are, no doubt, going to hoist a trophy with this bad boy.

Principles of Social Psychology by Charles Stangor - Published and Now Live!

A letter from the author:

I am completely excited to announce that Flat World Knowledge (FWK) has just published a new textbook, Principles of Social Psychology, that I have written. The book has received outstanding reviews from an advisory board and a large team of reviewers and I am excited to present it to you.

Please allow me to first tell you a bit about the innovative and student-friendly business model used by FWK, and then a bit about the book itself.

Sleepless Since Seattle: Reflections on #MLA2012

As a teacher of first-year community college students, I’ve returned from the Modern Language Association (MLA) 2012 conference in Seattle, where as many as sixty sessions touched on digital pedagogy, more convinced than ever of our collective responsibility to wean our students and ourselves from traditionally packaged textbooks, course management systems, and assessments.

What Textbook Authors Can Teach Apple

Eric Frank’s blog post on Apple’s announcement last week made me think of the many conversations we're having with authors and colleagues about content and product development. So in the spirit of open, here’s a few more thoughts.

Apple's Digital Textbook Announcement

No question that Apple’s digital textbook announcement on Thursday at New York’s Guggenheim Museum was a huge media event. They announced a set of positive things that will move the market forward, but it wasn’t anywhere near a game-changer. And textbook publishing is a market that needs serious game-changing.

But I’ve been wrong more than my fair share, so only time and results will tell.

The Flat World Tool Belt

Over at Command C, Sara Beacon posted several benefits to having been around a few years as a company. Having a consistent place to work. Established workflows and systems. Flat World Knowledge has been around for nearly 4 years now, and we feel the same way. Each year we need to assess our tool belt, and reflect upon ways to improve our workflow.

Writing a college textbook is an enormous undertaking, so as we celebrate the publication of Economics: Theory Through Applications by Russell Cooper and Andrew John - yes, online access is FREE! - we've asked the authors to spill the beans on it in one minute or less.

New Report: Textbooks, not Tuition, Driving College Costs

While college students are rallying on campuses across the US and UK protesting tuition hikes, a new report by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity finds the rise in college costs over the past decade has more to do with the price of textbooks and room and board than tuition.
